Summer Research

"Our civil engineering graduates are well equipped for professional leadership as well as lifelong learning."

A major focus of the undergraduate program is to prepare students for the next phase of their careers—whether that means engineering practice, management positions, or advanced education. Preparation for lifelong learning is a primary program goal. (Please see the Department's Mission and Objectives statement.)

The civil engineering program integrates technical education with a strong foundation in humanities, fine arts, and social sciences. Students take nearly half of their courses outside of the School of Engineering and associate daily with peers from other schools and colleges within Vanderbilt.

Undergraduate courses include mathematics, science, engineering science, and engineering design…along with courses in economics, humanities, social sciences, resources management, and public policy. Students receive significant hands-on laboratory experience, and various computer-based problem-solving and design methods are taught.

Students also participate in extra-curricular activities which help in kindling their interest in Civil Engineering. More information on such activities is available on the Student Activities page.

The undergraduate program allows room for flexibility and custom-tailoring. Students planning for graduate studies and research may include individual topics and research courses. Students at all levels have the opportunity to work with faculty in the generation of new knowledge. Selected students may participate in the University’s Summer Research Program for Undergraduates.

Details regarding the Undergraduate courses are available at these links (Curriculum and Course Details).

Admission as a freshman to Vanderbilt represents a selection based on the academic and personal records of applicants. All available information is considered, including:

• Secondary school academic record,
• Evidence of academic maturity and independence,
• Extracurricular activities,
• Contributions to the school and community,
• Scores on standardized tests.

The admission process is designed to select students with high standards of scholarship, strong personal character, and serious educational aims.

Admission to the undergraduate studies is coordinated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
