Naval Construction battalions were created during World War II to meet a vital need for military construction workers known as "Seabees". Seabees have a proud history during every major conflict since then, combining advanced base construction support with the ability to defend themselves and their work. The War in Iraq is no exception. Seabees have joined military engineers from other branches to provide critical engineering and construction support for US, coalition, and Iraqi forces. In particular, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Twenty-four (NMCB 24), a reserve unit from locations across the southeastern United States, deployed in March 2005 to support the Second Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq's Al Anbar Province. They returned in October, earning the "Perry award" as the best Reserve component construction battalion in the Navy for 2005. This seminar will provide an overview of their role in Iraq and accomplishments to include construction of a hardened dining facility, runway improvements, and construction of three base camps for Iraqi troops. |
