Professor Thackston taught water and waste treatment, water supply, wastewater collection, water quality management, and environmental law at Vanderbilt from 1965 through 2000, except for 1972-1973, when he was on leave to serve as Staff Assistant for Environmental Affairs to Tennessee Governor Winfield Dunn.
From 1980 through 1999, he was Chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt. He has done consulting and research in industrial wastes, thermal pollution, aeration and mixing of streams, effects of impoundments on water quality, environmental impact analysis, and environmental policy. Professor Thackston retired from Vanderbilt in December, 2000 and is currently active on several research projects and in private consulting.
